How to Find Out the Type & Capacity of RAM in a Laptop
A laptop is made up of several components, each playing a crucial role in ensuring the device runs smoothly. One of these components is RAM, or Random Access Memory, which acts as a temporary space for storing data used by the operating system.
Laptops come with different types and sizes of RAM. That’s why it's important to know what kind of RAM your laptop uses—especially if you’re planning to upgrade it or replace it with a new one.
So, how can you figure out the RAM type and size in your laptop? In this article, Carisinyal will walk you through some simple methods you can try to find out.
1. Check the sticker and laptop box

The first method is by checking the label sticker on the laptop. You can usually find this sticker near the touchpad area.
This label often includes details about your laptop’s RAM size. It may also list other specifications such as the processor type, graphics card model, storage capacity, and the version of the operating system.
If your laptop doesn’t have this sticker, you can take a look at the information printed on the packaging box. The specifications are usually found on the back or side of the box.
However, keep in mind that the details shown here reflect the original factory specifications. If the RAM has been upgraded or replaced, the data on the sticker or box may no longer be accurate. In that case, you’ll need to use another method, which we’ll explain in the next section.
2. Check using the CPU-Z application

If the label and packaging are no longer available, there’s still an easy way to find out the type and capacity of your RAM—by using an app called CPU-Z. This tool is designed to give a complete overview of your laptop’s hardware, including detailed RAM information.
At first, CPU-Z was only available for Windows devices. But now, it can also be used on Android, and there’s a portable version too, so you don’t need to install it permanently on your computer. Here's how to use it:
- Download and install CPU-Z.
- Open the app after installation.
- Go to the “Memory” tab to view the type and size of the installed RAM.
3. Check Using Task Manager

Task Manager is a built-in utility in the Microsoft Windows operating system. It provides detailed insights into the applications, processes, and services currently running on your device.
Besides monitoring performance, Task Manager also lets you check the RAM installed on your laptop. Here’s how to do it:
- Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys at the same time to open Task Manager.
- Once it opens, click on the Performance tab located at the top.
- Then, select Memory from the options on the left panel.
You’ll now see a complete overview of your laptop’s RAM, including total capacity and how much is currently in use. This helps you assess whether your system needs a memory upgrade or if the existing capacity is still sufficient for your needs.
4. Check via Windows Properties
Another way to view your laptop’s RAM capacity is through the Windows Properties menu. However, keep in mind that this method only shows the size of the RAM, not its type. Follow these steps:
1. Open File Explorer

Start by pressing Windows + E on your keyboard to open File Explorer. Once it’s open, right-click on This PC, then click on Properties.
2. Check the specifications

A new window will pop up showing details about your laptop’s hardware. You’ll be able to see information like the processor type, clock speed, and total RAM capacity.
The RAM section typically displays two values. The first one shows the full RAM capacity, while the value in parentheses indicates the usable amount—since some memory is allocated to system functions.
Those are some simple ways to check the type and capacity of RAM on your laptop. With this information, you can confidently decide whether it’s time to upgrade or replace your memory.
