5 Best Mosquito Repellent Apps for Android Phones

Written by Sera Serinda A

In today’s digital world, countless apps are designed to make life easier. Developers are always competing to create innovative applications, even for tasks as unusual as repelling mosquitoes.

While their effectiveness is still debated, these apps are based on the idea that mosquitoes dislike ultrasonic sounds in the range of 15 kHz to 65 kHz.

Using this concept, developers have created apps that generate sound signals within this frequency range, hoping to deter mosquitoes and make them "buzz off."

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have a mosquito repellent handy, these apps might be worth a try. Here’s a look at one of the top options:

1. Ultrasound Barrier

Ultrasound Barrier greets users with a sleek and modern design. The main screen features a circle labeled “Choose A Target” and several buttons below it.

When you tap the “Mosquito” button, the circle changes color and displays an animated mosquito, while a high-frequency sound starts playing. This is supposed to mimic the frequencies mosquitoes dislike.

The app doesn’t stop at mosquitoes—it also offers sound options for other animals and insects like flies, dogs, cats, and mice. There’s even a “Youngster” button that emits sounds young children might find unpleasant. Unique, isn’t it?

It’s no surprise this Japanese-developed app is 26 MB in size despite having only two main interface pages. However, one downside is the lengthy ads that appear while using it. Unfortunately, there’s no option to remove them or upgrade to an ad-free version.

What I like about Ultrasound Barrier:

  • The simple, modern, and sleek interface.
  • It can produce ultrasonic sounds targeting mosquitoes, flies, dogs, cats, mice, and even children.

What could be improved:

  • Include details about the exact frequency generated for each button.
  • Reduce the duration of the in-app ads, or provide an option to remove them.

2. Frequency Sound Generator by LuxDeLux

When I first installed this app by LuxDeLux, I was impressed by its clean and minimalist design. It looks like a music player but comes with a few unique buttons that serve different functions.

There’s an “Audio Balance” button to adjust the sound output, a volume control, an option to select sound wave animations, and a “+” button that opens submenus for selecting musical notes, enabling a stopwatch, or setting up a “Sweep Generator”.

Interestingly, this app isn’t specifically designed for repelling mosquitoes. However, it can produce sound waves within the 15 kHz to 65 kHz range—frequencies that are believed to irritate mosquitoes. That said, the app's maximum frequency output is capped at 22 kHz, which might limit its effectiveness for this purpose.

One standout feature is the ability to create custom presets. You could, for instance, set a frequency preset to deter mosquitoes, call a dog, or even clean water inside a musical instrument.

Beyond adjusting frequencies, the app allows you to personalize its appearance with nine color themes, set the frequency scale, activate an octave button, and view the exact decimal value of each frequency.

Unfortunately, ads pop up after every 3–4 interactions, which can be annoying. Thankfully, subscribing to the premium package removes these ads and unlocks additional features, including exporting sound files in .wav format.

What I like about Frequency Sound Generator by LuxDeLux

  • The interface is simple, clean, and user-friendly.
  • It’s easy to operate, even for beginners.
  • Generates frequencies ranging from 0 Hz to 22 kHz.

What could be improved:

  • The frequency range doesn’t go beyond 22 kHz, which limits its potential as a mosquito repellent.
  • The frequent ads can disrupt the user experience.

3. Frequency Sound Generator by Hoel Boedec

This Frequency Generator app greets you with a clean and user-friendly interface. Right off the bat, it offers ten built-in features that produce various types of signals.

You’ll find options like single-frequency signals, multi-frequency, musical tones, Tess Bass, binaural waves, SPX (sound effects) generator, and DTMF tones (dual-tone multifrequency signaling). These are ready to use, so you don’t have to create your own presets.

While the app is primarily designed for tasks like hearing tests, it can also generate frequencies between 15 kHz and 22 kHz to test mosquito-repelling sounds. However, since its maximum output is capped at 22 kHz, it may only succeed in annoying mosquitoes rather than repelling them.

One standout feature is the Noise Generator, which offers three “colors” of sound: White Noise, Pink Noise, and Brown Noise. These can help with relaxation, improving focus, or even aiding sleep.

Since the app is free, you’ll encounter frequent ads while using it. If the ads get in the way, you can opt for the “remove ads” option to enjoy an uninterrupted experience.

What I like about Frequency Sound Generator by Hoel Boedec:

  • It comes with pre-made signal types, so you don’t need to create presets for different purposes.
  • Includes an option to create custom presets.
  • Features a Noise Generator with three sound variations for sleep, relaxation, and concentration.

What could be improved:

  • The frequency range doesn’t extend far enough to be a truly effective mosquito repellent.
  • The frequent ads can disrupt the user experience.

4. Mosquitos Sound

This app from Just4Fun Playground emits sounds within the frequency range of 17.4 kHz to 20 kHz. You might wonder if it actually works to repel mosquitoes. Well, it could—some users on the Play Store have reported that it helps keep mosquitoes away.

One of the most noticeable features of this app is its simplicity. It has just one screen with a large central button, an "I" (information) button, and another button that links to other apps and games by the developer.

There are also sliders decorated with mosquito icons that let you adjust the frequency. To get the best results, you should crank your device’s volume to the max when using this app.

What I like about Mosquito Sound:

  • The app's design is super straightforward, featuring only one page.
  • It includes sliders that let you tweak the frequency.

What could be improved:

  • The ultrasound frequency range is too low to effectively repel mosquitoes.
  • The app contains many in-app ads, which can be annoying.

5. Mouse Ultrasound

Mouse Ultrasound claims to have a broader sound frequency range compared to other apps on this list, spanning from 1500 Hz to 65500 Hz. Interestingly, this range covers the theoretical maximum that mosquitoes are believed to dislike, which is between 15 kHz and 65 kHz.

When I first opened the app, I was a bit puzzled because there weren't any instructions or details provided. The interface simply featured a large box with Start and Stop buttons underneath.

Pressing the Start button triggered a sound and displayed animated sound waves inside the box. The Start button then switched to "Change," and with every press, the sound and animation altered, suggesting different frequencies were being used.

However, it wasn't clear if the frequency was at the low end of 1500 Hz or up near 65 kHz. If you're trying this app on mosquitoes, you might need to experiment with each sound individually.

Despite the lack of details, the app operates smoothly and is free of ads. It's versatile too—originally designed to repel mice, it can also potentially ward off mosquitoes.

What I like about Mouse Ultrasound:

  • It offers a range of frequencies that both mice and mosquitoes may find unpleasant.
  • There is a variety of sounds to choose from.
  • The app is straightforward and free to use.

What could be improved Mouse Ultrasound:

  • The app needs to provide information or descriptions about the specific frequencies of each sound emitted.

These apps are all available for free on the Play Store and could be handy in a pinch if you're looking to repel mosquitoes. Give them a try and see which one works best for you! Good luck!
