How to Clean Up Junk Files on Your Laptop

Written by Ganjar Maulana

When your laptop or computer’s storage is overloaded with various files, it can slow down the system's performance. This is especially true when storage space is limited, and you have many tasks to complete. It becomes frustrating because you can't work effectively and efficiently.

The files stored on our computers come in many types. One such type is the junk files generated by all the activities we perform on the computer.

For example, when we browse the internet, the computer’s browser leaves behind many junk files, such as cache from the websites we visit. Additionally, temporary files from various apps we’ve used also contribute to the clutter.

All these junk files accumulate in the available storage space. If too many of them pile up, it’s likely to affect the performance of your computer.

So, can you clean up these junk files? Absolutely! You can use the built-in features in the operating system to remove them. In this article, Carisinyal will guide you through several methods to help you remove these unnecessary files.

1. Cleaning the Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin is a temporary storage location for deleted files before they are permanently removed from the system. Regularly cleaning the Recycle Bin can free up a significant amount of storage space. Here are the steps:

  1. Double-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop.
  2. Select the Empty Recycle Bin option at the top.
  3. Confirm the deletion by choosing Yes.

Make sure to check the contents of the Recycle Bin before emptying it, as files deleted from the Recycle Bin cannot be recovered. By emptying the Recycle Bin, you can ensure that files you no longer need aren’t taking up valuable storage space on your laptop.

2. Uninstall Unnecessary Programs

Programs or applications that are no longer in use can take up a significant amount of space on your laptop, especially those with large file sizes. Removing unnecessary programs can free up a lot of storage space. Here’s how to uninstall them:

  1. Open the Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
  2. Look for the program you no longer need, right-click on it, and select Uninstall.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the program from your laptop.

Alternatively, you can also use the Settings on Windows 10 or Windows 11 to uninstall unnecessary apps. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, then select the app you want to remove and click Uninstall.

Removing unnecessary apps not only frees up storage space but also helps improve your laptop’s performance by reducing the load on the system.

3. Using the Disk Cleanup Feature

Windows also has a built-in feature called Disk Cleanup that helps clean up junk files. This feature is very useful for automatically clearing temporary files and files in the Recycle Bin.

Disk Cleanup can even dig deeper to find files that are no longer needed by your computer, such as Windows.old files after an OS upgrade or Windows Update files.

These types of files can take up a significant amount of space, sometimes even several gigabytes. By deleting them, you can free up a lot of storage space. Here are the steps:

  1. Click the Start button and type "Disk Cleanup" in the search bar.
  2. Select the drive you want to clean (usually drive C:).
  3. Click OK, then wait for Disk Cleanup to analyze the files that can be deleted.
  4. Check all the types of files you want to delete, such as Temporary files, Recycle Bin, and System cache.
  5. Click OK and confirm by selecting Delete Files.

Wait for the process to finish, and you’ll see that all the junk files have been removed. While these steps will delete most junk files, if you want to free up even more space, you can also remove system files.

To do this, click on the Clean up system files option. The system will then search for junk files across your entire C: drive. Files from previous Windows updates can be found this way and safely deleted from your system.

4. Delete Files in %temp% Folder

In addition to using Disk Cleanup, you can also manually delete temporary files to free up even more space. This method is useful if the Disk Cleanup feature is encountering issues. Here are the steps:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
  2. Type %temp% and press Enter.
  3. A folder containing temporary files will appear. Select all files by pressing Ctrl + A, then delete them by pressing the Delete key.
  4. Some files may not be deletable because they are currently in use by the system. If a warning appears, simply click Skip to move past those files.

5. Deleting Files in Temp Folder

In addition to the %temp% folder, you can also open the Temp folder in your system drive and delete the files inside. This folder stores various temporary files used by the system and applications, which are usually no longer needed once their initial use is complete.

To clean up the Temp folder, follow these steps:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
  2. Type C:\Windows\Temp and press Enter.
  3. Select all the files by pressing Ctrl + A, then delete them by pressing the Delete key.
  4. Click Skip if a warning appears stating that some files cannot be deleted.

This method will help free up more storage space previously used by temporary files. This cleanup is safe to perform because the files in the Temp folder are generally temporary and not needed long-term. However, make sure no important processes are running that may require those files.

These are some simple ways you can clean up junk on your laptop or computer. You can perform these steps periodically to prevent your storage from becoming clogged with unnecessary files.

Excess junk in your storage can slow down your laptop. By regularly cleaning it, you can ensure that your device’s performance remains optimal and more comfortable to use. If you prefer not to follow these steps manually, you can also use third-party applications to clean up junk automatically.
