Pros of OPPO A77s

The OPPO A77s is a smartphone option worthy of consideration in the mid-range. Especially when you are considering the advantages listed below.

1. Powerful Snapdragon 680 Chipset

If you need a high-performance phone, you can always rely on the Snapdragon 680 chipset to fulfill your daily gaming needs. Despite having a chipset from the Qualcomm 600 series, the OPPO A77s performs well in the latest games, such as Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, and Free Fire, among others.

The chipset has a 6 nm fabrication, so its power efficiency is comparable to the flagship chipsets. Also, the Snapdragon 680 includes eight processor cores consisting of four 2.4 GHz Kryo 265 Gold performance cores and four Kryo 265 Silver power-saving units with a clock speed of 1.9 GHz.

The Kryo 265 Gold is based on ARM Cortex A73 while the Kryo 265 Silver is based on ARM Cortex A53. The presence of the Cortex A73 microarchitecture here indicates that the phone can handle heavy graphics activities, such as photo and video editing, and gaming. Furthermore, this chipset also relies on Adreno 610 as its GPU.

The OPPO A77s performed quite well when running Genshin Impact on the Lowest graphics settings.

Quoting from Nano Review, this Snapdragon 680 chipset has an AnTuTu v9 score of 263,838 points. As for the Geekbench 5 score, it scores 374 points for single-core and 1569 points for multi-core.

Compared to the regular version of the OPPO A77 4G, the Snapdragon 680 brings a drastic performance improvement. The OPPO A77 4G is only equipped with the Helio G35 with an AnTuTu v9 score of 112,803 points. We can conclude that the performance of OPPO A77s is 134% higher than OPPO A77 4G.

Talking about the gaming experience, the Snapdragon 680 is quite powerful to play heavy games. A YouTube video uploaded by NL Tech serves as proof, showcasing the OPPO A77s' ability to run Genshin Impact without stuttering.

As mentioned, the frame rate obtained is quite decent and playable, despite using the lowest graphics settings. As a result, the image quality displayed is not good enough. Nevertheless, we can guarantee that OPPO A77s can play COD Mobile smoothly, using Medium graphics.

2. Large Internal Memory and RAM + RAM Expansion

For the lower mid-range smartphone, OPPO A77s really provides a spacious memory configuration. The internal memory only offers one option, 128 GB on the UFS 2.2 standard. Meanwhile, the RAM is available in two options, 6 GB and 8 GB (LPDDR4x).

If you choose the 8 GB variant, the RAM Expansion feature will increase the RAM to be 13 GB, as the memory "borrows" up to 5 GB from the internal memory and uses it as virtual RAM, making the gaming and multi-tasking experience can run smoothly.

If you think that 128 GB of internal memory is still insufficient, you can still use a microSDXC of up to 1 TB capacity in the separate slot provided. Since it uses a dedicated slot, you can fit an external memory and two SIM cards at the same time.

3. Superior 50 MP Dual Camera for Photography

Some people consider OPPO A77s as the "low budget" version of OPPO Reno7. It's is understandable considering its adoption of the exclusive Bokeh Flare Portrait feature from the Reno series. Moreover, the phone's design bears a striking resemblance to the OPPO Reno7.

The Bokeh Flare Portrait feature enables users to capture videos and images with a pleasing and artistic bokeh effect, adding a touch of elegance to their content. As a result, the OPPO A77s stands out as one of the most affordable options suitable for content creators.

In terms of camera configuration, the OPPO A77s takes a relatively "simpler" approach with its dual-camera setup. This decision is particularly notable as most other smartphones currently feature triple or quad cameras, showcasing OPPO's ambition to deliver a compelling photography experience.

The OPPO A77s features a primary camera with a 50 MP wide-angle sensor, boasting an f/1.8 aperture and a 77-degree field of view (FOV). Accompanying it is a 2 MP depth sensor camera, enhancing the phone's photography capabilities.

For selfies and video calls, the OPPO A77s is equipped with an 8 MP front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 79-degree FOV.

The camera app on the OPPO A77s offers a variety of features to enhance the photography experience, including night mode, panorama, portrait mode, time-lapse, slow motion, Google Lens integration, Extra HD mode, and a text scanner. Additionally, the phone boasts the Ultra Clear 108 MP feature.

The OPPO A77s is capable of capturing videos as well. Both the rear and front cameras support video recording at 720p and 1080p resolutions, at a smooth 30 frames per second (FPS).

Despite featuring only a dual-camera setup, the OPPO A77s delivers decent and commendable photography capabilities within its class. Take a look at some sample shots below to see its performance in action.

The OPPO A77s excels at capturing daytime shots with good detail and minimal noise. The second image demonstrates acceptable lighting and well-defined background blur.

However, according to NL Tech, the camera of the OPPO A77s struggles with color reproduction. In the third image, the red flower appears less vibrant than it should be, lacking the intensity expected. Nonetheless, considering its position as a mid-to-low-end phone, the overall camera performance is still satisfactory.

4. Long-lasting Battery + 33 W Fast Charging

The OPPO A77s will be a reliable tool for communication, productivity, and entertainment, especially if you frequently use your phone for a long time.

The phone is packed with a 5,000mAh battery that has excellent durability. YouTuber NL Tech has also tested the battery life, and the results were beyond expectations. After being tested on PC Mark at 100 nit brightness, the phone lasted for 17 hours and 7 minutes.

In addition to a large battery capacity, the Snapdragon 680 chipset also contributes to the phone's endurance. Due to the 6-nanometer manufacturing process, the phone also has excellent power efficiency.

According to OPPO, the OPPO A77s has a 33W SuperVOOC charger that can charge the phone from 0 to 100 percent in 69 minutes. Thankfully, the charger and cable are also included in the box. NL Tech says that fast charging on the OPPO A77s can reach full battery condition in 63 minutes. This is slightly faster than OPPO's claim.

Optimized Night Charging is a feature of the OPPO A77s that reduces the negative effects of overcharging. This feature will schedule a divided charging plan using AI technology. Thus, the phone's battery will not be fully charged until the next morning.

5. Feels like a High-End Premium Body Design Phone

We believe that no one would guess that the OPPO A77s is a mid-range phone based on its exterior. The design of the body makes it feel to be an expensive phone.

The OPPO A77s has a body dimension of 163.8 x 75 x 8 mm with a weight of 187 grams and 190 grams, depending on the color option you choose.

The OPPO A77s's exterior consists of two unique materials: plastic and leatherette. The model in the Sunset Orange color option features a fiberglass-leather construction.

Meanwhile, The Starry Black and Sky Blue Black variants offer OPPO Glow design technology that enables colors to change when seen from certain angles.

As compared to its predecessor, the OPPO A77s's body remains flat, making it easier to hold. The body of the phone has a matte finish that is pleasant to the touch and resistant to fingerprint stains, according to NL Tech.

The phone has also been installed with a biometric scanner sensor on the side, allowing for a smooth and clean rear body. The design of the rectangular camera module is straightforward. It contains two large camera lenses and side-mounted LED flash lighting.

If you chose the Sunset Orange variant, you'll notice that the design looks like OPPO Reno7. The difference is that the camera module's color looks to be inverted. Unlike the OPPO Reno7, the golden color of the camera module is on the outside rather than the inside.

This indicates that the OPPO A77s has a much classier body design than other phones in its price range.

6. Has Stereo Speaker

Even though the OPPO A77s might seem like a "cheap knockoff" of the OPPO Reno7, it surprisingly excels in one area. While the OPPO Reno7 comes with a single speaker, the OPPO A77s offers stereo speakers.

This means that the sound emanates from two distinct speakers located on the top and bottom, or from the left and right when held in landscape position.

The volume is remarkably loud, thanks to the Ultra Volume Mode feature. When this mode is active, you can increase the volume up to 200%, which is twice the normal level. As the speakers are designed linearly, they can deliver a balanced sound without bias.

These dual speakers also come with the Dirac 3.0 feature, enabling them to reduce noise and optimize stereo sound for the best movie-watching experience.

7. The Screen Performs Well, Boasting a 90 Hz Refresh Rate

When it comes to the display, the OPPO A77s delivers a decent visual experience. This phone is equipped with a 6.56-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution (720 x 1612 pixels).

Although not the smallest, this screen size isn't the largest in its class either. Interestingly, this 20:9 aspect ratio screen supports a typical brightness level of 480 nits, with a maximum brightness of 600 nits.

The OPPO A77s also supports a high 90 Hz refresh rate, making screen movements 50% smoother compared to the conventional 60 Hz.

One unique aspect of the OPPO A77s display is the colors it produces. Based on tests conducted by NL Tech, the phone's screen can achieve 99.53% sRGB color gamut and 96.17% DCI-P3. This is almost in line with the company's claim that the OPPO A77s supports 100% DCI-P3 and 96% NTSC.

In practical terms for everyday use, the OPPO A77s screen will produce more vibrant colors when watching content or binge-watching on Netflix. Moreover, thanks to its excellent color accuracy, the screen is comfortable to use for editing graphics or videos.

8. Comes with IP54 Certification

One thing you can count on with every OPPO product is its build quality. This phone has undergone a series of rigorous tests, such as 20,000 times of plugging and unplugging the USB Type-C port, 150,000 volume button presses, 500,000 power button presses, and a drop test from 1 meter.

Moreover, the OPPO A77s is also ideal for those who frequently work outdoors. This is because the phone comes with an IP54 certification, which protects the device from damage, even when exposed to water sprays from all directions.

Cons OPPO A77s

Undeniably, the OPPO A series does have a few weaknesses that make it less competitive than other mid-range series. Here are some things you need to consider before buying the OPPO A77s.

1. The HD+ Screen Resolution

oppo a77s layar masih hd plus_

Although the OPPO A77s' screen can display highly accurate and vivid colors, its resolution is only 720p or HD+, while many of its competitors have already moved on to Full HD+.

However, YouTuber NL Tech mentioned that the screen still appears to be Full HD+. This means that users are likely still treated to a fairly sharp display. Graphic displays will only appear choppy if you observe closely.

It is quite unusual for a device of this price to still have an HD+ display. The majority of similarly priced phones, which are notably of a lower class, already feature Full HD+ displays.

2. Without Ultrawide Camera

oppo a77s featured image_

Upon examining the camera setup of the OPPO A77s, one aspect that stood out as a concern is the absence of an ultrawide camera. While the phone boasts a high-resolution 50 MP primary camera, the lack of an ultrawide camera in a midrange device is disappointing and may not meet the expectations of users who value versatile photography options.

Without an ultrawide lens, users cannot capture multiple subjects in a single frame. This becomes a significant issue when taking a large group of people simultaneously, such as at a wedding invitation or in a tourist area.

In addition, neither the front nor the rear cameras on this device support 60 FPS video recording. While 30 FPS is still considered acceptable, uploading a 30 FPS video to Instagram or WhatsApp degrades the quality and makes it appear disjointed.

Therefore, 60 FPS video is essential. Even after being compressed by Instagram and WhatsApp's respective algorithms, the resolution of these videos remains the same.

3. Excellent Connectivity but Missing NFC

The OPPO A77s comes with a pretty comprehensive set of connectivity features. From Dual Band WiFi that can connect to 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0 with A2DP and aptX HD codecs, to a USB Type-C 2.0 charging port that supports on-the-go.

In addition, this phone, which is released with Android 12 and ColorOS 12.1, also includes a variety of sensors, namely geomagnetic, proximity, optical sensor, accelerometer, gravity sensor, and even a pedometer.

As for its GPS sensor, the device supports A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, and QZSS. The OPPO A77s is also very practical when it comes to unlocking the screen, offering face unlock and a responsive side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Unfortunately, its extensive connectivity does not come with NFC. Given its price range, this phone would be expected to have an NFC feature. Especially considering the specification information on GSM Arena, which states that the phone has NFC in some regions.

Conclusion

Indeed, if an ultrawide camera is a crucial requirement, there are likely other smartphone options in the mid-range segment that would better suit your needs.

However, this doesn't mean that the OPPO A77s are entirely bad. You can still enjoy the premium design that is often missing in other phones in its class. The design has always been one of OPPO's main strengths, and this is once again demonstrated in the OPPO A77s.

And, even though its screen is still HD+, you can still enjoy truly full and complete colors. It's quite rare for a mid-range phone's screen to support a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. So, what about you? Are you interested to buy it?
