How to Turn on Bluetooth While in Airplane Mode

Written by Ganjar Maulana

Bluetooth is a very useful feature for connecting devices such as TWS earbuds, smartwatches, or other wireless devices. However, when on an airplane, you are required to activate airplane mode, which automatically disables Bluetooth.

Luckily, it’s now possible to turn on Bluetooth while in airplane mode. The process is slightly different from the usual method. In this guide, Carisinyal will walk you through the steps to safely activate Bluetooth in airplane mode:

1. Enable Airplane Mode

Upon entering an airplane, all passengers are required to activate airplane mode on their devices before takeoff. This mode is designed to turn off cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth signals to prevent interference with the aircraft's communication systems.

So, the first step is to enable airplane mode. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Select the Connections option.
  3. Toggle the Flight Mode option to turn it on.

Alternatively, you can also activate airplane mode through the quick settings menu. This is usually accessed by swiping down (for Android devices) or swiping up (for iOS devices). The icon for airplane mode is typically represented by a small airplane symbol.

2. Activate Bluetooth Manually

Once airplane mode is activated, all wireless connections, including cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, will be turned off. Now, to turn Bluetooth back on while in airplane mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu on your device.
  2. Look for and select the Connections option.
  3. In the Bluetooth section, toggle the switch to turn it on.

Now, Bluetooth is active again, even though your phone is still in airplane mode and the cellular connection is off.

3. Connect to Bluetooth Device

After Bluetooth is activated, you can connect your device to headphones, a smartwatch, or other Bluetooth devices. You can pair them just as you would in normal mode.

However, if your Bluetooth device has already been connected to your phone before, it will usually reconnect automatically, so you won’t need to pair it manually.

That’s it! These are the easy steps to enable Bluetooth while in airplane mode. However, keep in mind that although Bluetooth is generally allowed during airplane mode, each airline has its own policies regarding the use of electronic devices during flights.

Therefore, it’s important to listen to the cabin crew's announcements about the rules for using electronic devices for the safety and comfort of everyone.
