5 Easy Steps to Increase RAM Capacity on itel Phone

Written by Ananda Ganesha M

Among all the components in an Android smartphone, RAM is one of the most crucial. Without enough RAM, a phone's performance can suffer, making daily tasks sluggish and unresponsive.

Fortunately, many smartphone brands now offer features that allow users to expand their RAM virtually. One such brand is itel, which includes a feature called MemFusion. This feature is enabled by default from the factory, so users don’t need to configure it manually.

Additionally, most itel smartphones support further RAM expansion through MemFusion. For example, on my itel RS4, the feature is already activated out of the box, requiring no additional setup.

As the name suggests, MemFusion "fuses" or combines a portion of the internal storage with RAM to enhance performance.

On the itel RS4, which comes with 8GB of LPDDR4x physical RAM, users can choose from three virtual RAM options: 3GB, 5GB, or 8GB. By default, the phone automatically enables MemFusion with 5GB of virtual RAM.

When using 5GB of MemFusion, this means that 5GB of internal storage is allocated as virtual RAM. The same applies to the 3GB and 8GB options.

Generally, the amount of virtual RAM available will not exceed the phone’s original (physical) RAM capacity. For example, if the itel RS4 comes with 8GB of RAM, the maximum virtual RAM it can allocate is 8GB.

That’s why you might see smartphone stores advertising specs like 8GB + 8GB RAM on Android devices. However, this doesn’t mean the phone has 16GB of actual RAM. Instead, it has 8GB of physical RAM plus 8GB of virtual RAM, which is created from internal storage.

So, does virtual RAM perform the same as physical RAM? The answer is no. Virtual RAM is only used when the phone’s physical RAM is completely occupied by temporary app data.

In this case, virtual RAM acts more like passive memory. When the physical RAM, which handles active processes, frees up space, data stored in virtual RAM is then moved back to it.

So, don’t be surprised if virtual RAM doesn’t significantly boost your phone’s performance. In many cases, your phone’s physical RAM is already sufficient to handle your activities, meaning virtual RAM may remain unused.

Ultimately, the type of RAM and its original capacity have a far greater impact on performance than virtual RAM.

That said, using MemFusion can still help optimize overall performance, especially in situations where additional memory is needed. However, the option to enable this feature is somewhat hidden in the settings menu. Follow these steps to activate it:

1. Click on the Settings Icon

To access the settings, tap on the Settings icon, which is represented by a gear symbol, either from the Home Screen or the App Drawer.

If you have trouble finding it, open the App Drawer by swiping up from the Home Screen and type Settings into the search bar. Alternatively, you can access the Settings menu through Quick Settings, located next to the notification panel.

2. Select Special Function

The MemFusion feature can be found in the Special Function menu. To access it, open the Settings menu and scroll down until you see Special Function, then tap on it.

3. Select MemFusion Option

Within the Special Functions menu, you'll find a variety of unique features designed to enhance your smartphone experience.

Some of these features include Smart Panel to display the sidebar from the end of the screen, Dual App to connect two accounts in the same app, and Social Turbo which contains various social media features.

You'll also find the MemFusion feature within this menu. Tap on MemFusion to expand your smartphone’s RAM and improve performance.

4. Tap on “MemFusion”

Next, you’ll see a toggle switch to enable MemFusion. Tap on it so that the white circle moves to the right, indicating that the feature is activated.

On the itel RS4, 5GB of virtual RAM is allocated by default. However, you can adjust this setting and choose between 3GB, 5GB, or 8GB of virtual RAM based on your preference.

5. Select the Amount of Virtual RAM

If you want to adjust the amount of virtual RAM, tap on Set Virtual RAM. This will bring up three options for you to choose from.

For example, if you want to increase your virtual RAM from 5GB to 8GB, simply tap on the 8GB option. Then, select Modify and Restart to apply the changes.

Now, just wait for your phone to restart, and you’re all set! You’ve successfully expanded your RAM virtually—simple, right?

With the additional RAM, you no longer have to worry about apps force-closing when multitasking. However, if your itel phone already has 8GB of physical RAM, increasing virtual RAM may not be necessary. Hope this helps!
