5 Easy Steps to Increase RAM Capacity on itel Phone
RAM is one of the most important components in an Android smartphone. Without enough RAM, your phone’s performance can suffer, especially when running daily activities.
These days, many heavy apps and games need a lot of RAM. Have you ever had an app suddenly close or had to restart an app when switching between them? This is often because your phone doesn’t have enough RAM.
A few years ago, having 2 GB, 3 GB, or even 4 GB of RAM was enough. But now, 4 GB RAM feels insufficient. For today’s standards in 2024 and beyond, you need at least 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM.
Fortunately, finding affordable phones with large RAM is easier now. For example, the itel RS4 costs around US$106,00 and comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.
Additionally, many itel phones, including the RS4, come with a feature called MemFusion that allows you to virtually expand the RAM. On my itel RS4, this feature is already enabled from the factory.
Why is RAM important on Android phones? How does MemFusion work? How do you activate the RAM enhancer feature on your phone? I’ll cover all of this in the steps below.
What is RAM?
RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory, is a component in smartphones used as temporary storage. Unlike internal storage, which stores files permanently, RAM holds temporary data from the apps or system you’re using.
The more apps you open, the more temporary data RAM needs to handle. That’s why phones with small RAM often close background apps, as they can’t store all the temporary data. Here are some of the functions of RAM on Android smartphones:
- Streamline Multitasking
Having more RAM lets you run several apps in the background without slowing down. You can switch between them seamlessly, picking up where you left off without delays.
- Boost Gaming Performance
RAM, along with the chipset, plays a crucial role in how well games perform. For resource-heavy games like Genshin Impact, more RAM ensures smoother gameplay without lag or stuttering.
- Faster App Launches
More RAM also means apps open faster. It allows the app data and instructions to load without interference from other apps, keeping them ready in the background for quicker access.
Given the crucial role RAM plays in smartphone performance, many brands have developed features to enhance it. Unlike laptops, where you can physically add more RAM by inserting it into available slots, increasing RAM in Android phones is done virtually.
This means it "borrows" some capacity from the internal storage to boost its functionality. Let's dive into how this works in the explanation below.
What is MemFusion (RAM Booster Feature)?
MemFusion, or Memory Fusion, is a feature found in smartphones from brands like itel, Infinix, and Tecno under Transsion Holdings. This feature enhances the phone's RAM by combining it with a small portion of internal storage memory.
Other smartphone brands have similar features but under different names. For instance, OPPO offers a RAM Expansion feature, vivo has Extended RAM, realme uses DRE (Dynamic RAM Expansion), Samsung includes RAM Plus, and Xiaomi offers Memory Extension.
Take the itel RS4, for example. It comes with 8 GB of physical RAM and offers additional virtual RAM options of 3 GB, 5 GB, or 8 GB.
By default, MemFusion is set to use 5 GB of virtual RAM, meaning it allocates 5 GB of the phone's internal storage to act as RAM. This setup is the same whether you choose 3 GB, 5 GB, or 8 GB of virtual RAM.
Typically, the amount of virtual RAM a phone can use won’t exceed its original RAM capacity. So, if an itel RS4 has 8 GB of RAM, the most virtual RAM it can use is also 8 GB.
That's why you might see phones advertised with "8 GB + 8 GB RAM" in stores, indicating 8 GB of physical and 8 GB of virtual RAM, not 16 GB of total physical RAM.
Does virtual RAM perform as well as physical RAM? Not exactly. Virtual RAM is generally used only when the physical RAM is fully occupied with temporary data from active applications.
It acts more like a backup that holds data temporarily until there's space in the physical RAM to process it. This means the boost in performance might not be noticeable since virtual RAM is only used in specific situations.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of RAM in processing data depends not just on the presence of virtual RAM, but more importantly on the type and original capacity of the RAM.
For example, LPDDR4x RAM transfers data faster than older types like LPDDR4 and LPDDR3. In high-end models, LPDDR5 and LPDDR5x RAM offer even faster data transfer rates.
How to Increase RAM on an itel Phone Using MemFusion
MemFusion is a great tool to boost your phone's performance, but finding it in the settings can be a bit tricky. Here’s how to enable it:
1. Open "Settings"
Start from your Home Screen or App Drawer, and tap the Settings icon, which looks like a gear.
If you can't find it right away, swipe up from the Home Screen to open the App Drawer and type "Settings" in the search field. You can also access Settings from the Quick Settings panel next to your notifications.
2. Go to "Special Function"
Scroll down in the Settings menu until you see the option labeled “Special Function.” Tap on it. This is where you'll find the MemFusion feature.
3. Select the "MemFusion" Option
Inside the Special Function menu, you’ll see various options that can enhance your phone's capabilities. Look for features like Smart Panel, which brings up a sidebar from the edge of the screen, Dual App for using two accounts in the same app, and Social Turbo with its assorted social media tools.
Find and tap on “MemFusion.” This is your key to adding more RAM to your smartphone.
4. Activate MemFusion
Next, you'll see a toggle to activate MemFusion. Tap the toggle so the white circle moves to the right.
On the itel RS4, the default virtual RAM is set to 5 GB. However, you can choose to allocate either 3 GB or 8 GB instead.
5. Select Virtual RAM Size
If you want to change the virtual RAM allocation, tap on "Set Virtual RAM." You'll see three options to choose from. For instance, if you want to increase your RAM from 5 GB to 8 GB, simply tap on the "8 GB" option. Then, select "Modify" and restart your phone.
Wait for your phone to finish restarting, and you'll have successfully added virtual RAM. Easy, right?
Now that you've added more RAM, you won't have to worry about apps closing when multitasking. However, if your itel phone already has 8 GB of RAM, adding more virtual RAM might not be necessary. Hope this helps!
