How to Mute and Unmute Instagram Stories

Written by Linda

Instagram Stories let users share content that disappears after 24 hours. But sometimes, you might want to control which stories show up in your feed, whether for personal reasons or just to focus on more relevant content.

Instagram makes it easy to mute and unmute stories. Here's a simple guide on how to do both using the Instagram app on your smartphone.

How to Mute Instagram Stories

Muting Instagram stories means that stories from a specific account won't appear in the top row of your Instagram feed. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Open the Account You Want to Mute

Open the Instagram app and find the story from the account you want to mute at the top of your feed.

2. Find the “Mute” Option

Go to the profile of that account, tap on the “Following” button, then tap the arrow icon.

3. Select “Mute”

From the menu that appears, choose “Mute.” You'll have the option to mute just their stories or both their stories and posts.

4. Confirm Your Selection

If you only want to hide their stories, select “Stories.”

You can also mute Instagram stories directly from your home feed. Just find the account you want to mute, press and hold on their profile picture until the “Mute” option appears.

How to Unmute Instagram Stories

If you ever want to start seeing stories from an account you previously muted, unmuting is easy. Here’s how:

1. Go to the User's Profile

Go to the profile of the user you want to unmute. Tap the “Following” button to see more options.

2. Select “Unmute Stories”

In the menu, find and select the “Mute” option. Slide the “Stories” toggle to the left, and you'll start seeing their stories in your feed again.

Using the mute and unmute features on Instagram helps you organize your feed to match your personal preferences. It’s a handy way to keep your Instagram experience enjoyable and tailored to what you want to see.

By deciding what content you want to see or hide, you can make your Instagram browsing more personal and enjoyable. Use these features as needed to make the most of your time on social media and maintain a healthy relationship with your social media.
